For the 2008/09 season:

1) John Oakes, the proprietor of Harbord House. John lets us have the venue, and without his support, there would be no series!

Alexander McCall Smith

Alexander McCall Smith has written more than 60 books, including academic titles, short story collections and a number of immensely popular children’s books. But he is best known for his internationally acclaimed No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which rapidly rose to the top of best-seller lists throughout the world. The series has been translated into 39 languages and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

Other popular series include The Sunday Philosophy Club series and 44 Scotland Street series. In addition, Smith has authored a delightful German professor series beginning with Portuguese Irregular Verbs, and children’s books including the Akimbo series about a boy in Africa and the Harriet Bean books.

Smith was born in what is now Zimbabwe and was educated there and in Scotland. He became a law professor in Scotland, and it was in this role that he returned to Africa to work in Botswana where he helped to set up a new law school at the University of Botswana. He is now a Professor Emeritus at the University of Edinburgh. Smith currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland with his wife Elizabeth and their two daughters Lucy and Emily.
